Is My iPad Charging?

Posted July 21 2011

One of the coolest iPad accessories is the USB charger.  You don’t have to rely on a traditional iPad charger which requires an electrical socket.  Because the iPad USB charger uses your computer and a iPad cable which you probably have on hand, it is much more convenient.  However, a lot of USB ports simply aren’t powerful enough for charging the iPad.

If your USB iPad charger is working, then you will see a lightning bolt symbol in the middle of the battery-life meter.  If your iPad charger isn’t working, then you will get a “Not Charging” message on the screen instead.

Just because your computer USB port doesn’t work the first time, it doesn’t mean you should give up on this method.  Try putting your iPad in suspension mode and then attempt using the USB iPad charger again.  Keep in mind that often, if your computer goes into sleep mode, then you will not be able to use the USB iPad charger.

The  fastest way to charge iPad is with the standard 10W charger.  This will get you to 80% power in about 3 hours.  There are some iPad accessories for charging which can get it powered even faster.  The best we have tested got to 80% in about 2 ½ hours.

There are many more options for charging iPad than just the USB and 10W charger.  You can also get some new iPad accessories like the solar-power iPad case which charges your tablet in sunlight.  You can just leave your tablet case out near a sunny window and it will get enough juice to keep you powered.   While the solar powered iPad charger isn’t the fastest method, it can be one of the most convenient because it does have a built-in reserve battery for backup on cloudy days.
